A LOCAL man died of a heart attack while hiking at the Tasek Lama Recreational Park, said the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).

The RBPF received calls regarding the incident at 9.36am. It was reported that the 49-year-old man was hiking with his friends when he suddenly collapsed.

Members of the public later assisted him and he was rushed to the hospital.

A doctor from Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit said that the man passed away as a result of a myocardiac infarction (heart attack). No foul play was suspected in the incident.

Following the incident, a picture went viral on social media yesterday showing an ambulance which was unable to enter the park due to the main entrance being blocked by parked vehicles.

When contacted by The Brunei Times, the Ministry of Health declined to verify the photo.

However, a spokesperson from the Municipal Department advised visitors and trekkers who frequent the Tasek Lama Recreational Park in the capital to make use the parking spaces provided and to avoid blocking the main entrance in case a medical emergency occurs.

Although he could not immediately verify whether the ambulance sent to help the hiker yesterday was able to enter the park or not, the spokesperson noted that the department will take appropriate measures to ensure that the entrance will be kept clear for emergency puposes in the future.
