THE Marine Department yesterday advised seafarers to avoid the waters near “temporary working zones” of ongoing bridge project areas for the safety of themselves and construction workers at the areas.

The department said this during a navigation safety briefing held as part of a public awareness roadshow related to maritime safety held at the Civil Service Club in Mentiri yesterday.

Meanwhile, another briefing during the roadshow touched on the regulations under the Merchant Shipping (Registration of Fishing Vessels and Pleasure Craft) Regulations 2011, including the application process for the registration and licensing of boats.

Marine Officer Pengiran Haji Amirul Azri Pg Hj Abdul Hamid and Assistant Ship Registrar Jumat Hj Jamudin delivered the briefings.

Among those present yesterday was Acting Marine Director Captain Awang Basza Alexzandar Hj Basri.

The roadshow was organised as a way to increase public awareness about maritime safety issues and relevant laws and regulations.

It also intended to facilitate communication and interaction among maritime safety agencies, private stakeholders, fishermen, and boat owners and operators in Brunei Darussalam.

The department stated that the public with inquiries relevant to the registration and licensing of boats may contact the department at 2771347 ext. 261.
