SOASCIS to host international conference

THE Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies (SOASCIS) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will be hosting its 5th International Conference from May 9-11 at the Lecture Theatre, PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences Extension Building, UBD.

This year’s conference will see 15 speakers from home and abroad deliver talks based on the conference’s theme of ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Contemporary Islamic Studies: Possibilities in Light of the Traditional Ideas of Ijtihad, Tajdid, Islah and Bid‘ah.’

The conference will also see papers presented which discuss innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to the contemporary teaching of Islamic studies and focusing on new ideas and insights on improvements to meet the needs of contemporary society.

The conference will feature discussions led by international Islamic experts such as Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Kamal Hassan of the International Islamic University Malaysia, Prof Dr Muzaffer Seker of Necmettin Erbakan University, Turkey, Prof Dato Dr Jamil Othman of the International Institute of Islamic Thought, East and Southeast Asia and Dr Muhammad Mansur Ali of Ebrahim College, London & Cardiff University.

Discussions on entrepreneurship issues in relation to contemporary Islamic studies will be facilitated by Adna Shatriremie Hj A Abd Rahman from UBD’s School of Business and Economics and Entrepreneurship Village.

The conference aims to be an intellectual platform for discussions amongst local and international experts in academia as well as professionals in both public and private sectors.

It will also see the attendance of government officials, lecturers, academics and students and is open to both local and international participants who are interested.

The conference will cost local students and retired individuals $100 and non-students $300 while the cost for international participants will be US$100 for students and US$250 for non-students.

Groups of up to three participants from the same organisation pay just $650 for locals and US$550 for non-locals.
