A LOCAL woman was imposed a $20,000 fine yesterday after she admitted to possessing untaxed cigarettes and alcohol.

On April 29, Norsita Mohammad was brought in for questioning when customs officers at the Kuala Lurah Control Post found a total of 82 cartons of cigarettes and three bottles of liquor during an inspection on a car she was driving.

During the investigation, Norsita admitted that the contrabands belonged to her as she had bought it from a shop in Limbang in Sarawak, Malaysia, for $350.

During the proceedings yesterday, Norsita indicated that she was only able to pay less than $200 a month for the fines. The court however rejected the defendant’s payment proposal unless she was able pay at least $1,000 every month.

The defendant was further ordered to pay the fines immediately or serve the in-default sentence of 12 months in jail.
