THE Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2017 was officially launched yesterday by the minister of education.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman launched the prestigious competition in a ceremony at lecture theatre 2 of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).

The CIPTA Award, which serves as a platform for inventors and innovators to express their creative ideas, is organised by UTB in partnership with Brunei LNG. CIPTA is an acronym for Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement.

The CIPTA Award 2017 carries the theme ‘Innovation for Sustainable Economy’ to highlight the importance of supporting the nation’s vision of cultivating an innovative society that will produce a diversified and sustainable economy based on a culture of knowledge and innovation.

The Vice Chancellor of UTB and chairperson of the CIPTA 2017 Executive Committee, Associate Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah Hj Sulaiman, said the theme reflects the desire of the nation to diversify the economy through science and innovation.

“There is no doubt that innovation can change the economic landscape of a country. It also helps in the growth of a productive and innovative community.”

She said UTB, as a higher education institution, has a strategic focus in engaging with the community.

“The CIPTA Award in itself will help the national agenda in the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to achieve the target ratio of science and art degree recipients of 60:40.”

After the ceremony, the minister toured the CIPTA 2017 exhibition at UTB’s library.

A technical briefing was then held for prospective CIPTA participants from various secondary schools and higher education institutions. It provided them with a detailed explanation on the categories of the competition, rules and regulations, assessment process and judging criteria.
