THE Intermediate Court yesterday sentenced a man to 28 months in prison and three strokes of the cane for stealing from a mosque.

Mohammad Amli Matadir pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of theft at Kg Kilanas Mosque between March 7 and March 8 this year.

The court document stated that on March 7, the former Fire and Rescue Department personnel made an attempt to steal from the donation boxes but was unsuccessful as he was interrupted by mosque goers who had entered the premises.

The next day, the defendant went back to the same mosque and was able to steal $20 from a donation box.

A police investigation led to his arrest on March 11 and he later admitted during an investigation to the attempted theft and theft offences.
