SPECIAL needs NGO Pusat Ehsan aims to complete construction of its rehabilitation block within nine months, said a member of its board of trustees.

Hj Ahmad Hj Abdul Rahman said they will announce the winning tender for the project this month and plan to begin construction in May.

The rehab block is Phase 1 of Pusat Ehsan’s redevelopment plan, which will see the centre get a complete facelift, demolishing old buildings to make way for a new school block, vocational training block, multi-purpose hall, canteen and nursery.

The new facility will be able to accommodate more students and staff as well as increase the centre’s capacity to serve those with special needs.

The centre sits on about 15 acres of land which will be fully utilised to upgrade Pusat Ehsan into a modern facility for the special needs community.

“The money for construction has already been set aside, from private donors and our fund-raising activities. Other people have contributed in other ways such as providing construction material, roofing and wiring,” said Hj Ahmad

He said the completion date for the entire redevelopment project depends largely on cash flow and from where they can source the funds.

Hj Ahmad said it takes about $40,000 to cover the centre’s operational costs each month, including teachers’ salaries.

The funds are sourced from public donations, charity events and annual fund-raising activities.

Pusat Ehsan is a charity for individuals with special needs, providing special education, training, care and rehabilitation for the physically and intellectually-challenged.

There are 156 special needs students currently registered at the centre’s headquarters in Bengkurong and another 53 students at its Kuala Belait Branch.
