Deputy Defence Minister attends ASEAN-Russia Defence Ministerial meet

THE Deputy Minister of Defence First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Mohd Tamit was in Moscow recently to represent the country at the Informal ASEAN-Russia Defence Ministerial Meeting.

During the meeting, activities to further enhance defence relations between ASEAN member countries and Russia which could be carried out in the future were identified.

ASEAN defence ministers welcomed Russia’s commitment and continued support to the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM)-Plus framework, especially in maritime security, counter-terrorism, military medicine, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and humanitarian demining.

Views were exchanged on issues of security and ways to enhance military cooperation.

Russian Minister of Defence Sergey Shoygu, who chaired the meeting, expressed his appreciation on the support given by his ASEAN counterparts while also underscoring the importance of the meeting in reviewing the progress of defence cooperation between Russia and ASEAN member countries.

During the meeting, the deputy defence minister met the Laotian Minister of National Defence Lieutenant General Chansamone Chanyalath, who was the head of delegation for Laos and also the current chair of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting.

The deputy minister also discussed bilateral defence and military cooperation with the Russian Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov in a bilateral meeting in Moscow.
