Charity polo raises $53k for Pusat Ehsan

LOCAL charity Pusat Ehsan received a $53,122 donation yesterday, raised as proceeds from the recent Charity Polo Day.

His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah, who serves as chairperson of the Pusat Ehsan Board of Trustees, organised the tournament in collaboration with Cityneon earlier this month.

The royal siblings were on hand to present the mock cheque to the board’s executive trustee, Pg Datin Hjh Noraini PDNLDR Pg Hj Abdul Momin, during an event at the centre’s headquarters in Bengkurong.

The students and staff of Pusat Ehsan performed several dance numbers and songs for the guests, before posing with the prince and princess for photographs.

Pusat Ehsan is a charity for individuals with special needs, providing special education, training, care and rehabilitation for the physically and intellectually-challenged.

There are 156 special needs students currently registered at the centre’s headquarters in Bengkurong and another 53 students at its Kuala Belait Branch.

Board member Hj Ahmad Hj Abd Rahman told _The Brunei Times _that it takes about $40,000 to cover the centre’s operational costs each month, including teachers’ salaries.

The funds are largely sourced from public donations, charity events and annual fund raising activities.
