YSHHB hands $12,650 aid to house fire victims

YAYASAN Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) yesterday handed financial aid totalling $12,650 to four families who were victims of the recent housefires in Kg Keriam, Tutong and Kg Batu Ampar, Jalan Mulaut Limau Manis.

The recipients were Kalsum Hj Japar whose house was ravaged during the fire in Kg Keriam as well as some of the victims of the housefire in Kg Batu Ampar, Mazlan Hj Adam, his son in law Md Adizarin Abd Latif and his wife Norhayati Shahbudin who was representing her grandfather Yaakub Serail.

On hand to give out the donations was Managing Director of YSHHB Hj Brahim Hj Ismail.

Kalsum, who is single, was previously living with her father in the house but has since been living alone after he passed away. She is now staying with her brother who also lives in Kg Keriam.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Kalsum said the house fire was caused by a rechargeable torchlight. According to a previous report, Kalsum said that she was watching television when she noticed a burning smell coming from her bedroom. Upon investigating, she discovered that a small fire had broken out.

She said she rushed to get water from the sink but the smoke started to get thick and dark. The fire then spread to the wooden walls, before she rushed out of the house and yelled for help.

Kalsum added that her neighbour, who is also her cousin, made the 995 emergency call.

In another interview, Norhayati said the fire that gutted house was caused by faulty wiring. She added that she and her family members are now staying with her in laws in Jalan Wasan.

Also, in another ceremony held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) building, Yaakub and Mazlan also received zakat (tithes) donations totalling $1,200 as well as school supplies for three of Mazlan’s children who are still schooling from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

According to a MoRA press statement, the donations were allocated from sakat collections for the poor and destitute.

Present to give out the donations was Hj Hamzah Hj Sabtu, acting deputy secretary of MUIB.
