VILLAGE Consultative Councils (MPKs) in Belait are urged to participate in the upcoming Belait fair slated for next month, as it is an opportunity for them to gain prominence in their respective One Village One Product (OVOP) businesses.

For such purpose, Yang Berhormat Hj Mohd Yusof Dulamin, head of Kg Mumong whose MPK is also the co-organiser of the event said that MPKs who wanted to join are exempted from paying rental fees.

He added that the move was also made considering the limited capabilities of MPKs as they may not be able to generate income against the rental fees, as most of them have yet to get stable productions in delivering their business.

Moreover, YB Hj Mohd Yusof also projected that most of the OVOPs sold would be food products, which may face strong competitions from paying vendors who would sell the same thing.

Besides from encouraging the MPKs to promote their OVOPs, YB Hj Mohd Yusof said that the fair was aimed at encouraging the public to give more support to the local products, and introduce them to the varieties available, as most of them may be difficult to find even within the country.

“It is also hoped that, by showcasing the local products to them, they may be further moved to spend within the country, which may help Brunei to stabilise its wavering economy, rather than spending it overseas,” he said.

Despite the deadline being up by the end of the month, YB Hj Mohd Yusof has yet to get a definite list on which MPKs have confirmed their participation to the fair, slated to begin early next month.

Ciara Chang, a marketing executive at RYS Entertainment, a partner company for the event however confirmed that there are currently around 40 vendors registered for the Belait Fair.

She added that there are still some slots for those who are interested to participate and promote their products, especially for the MPKs, as the company also encourages their participation to the fair.

Amongst the interested parties include the MPK of Kg Sungai Teraban, whose core OVOP are fish and marine snacks Head of Kg Sungai Teraban Mohd Mershidi Hj Mohd Shara warmed up to the idea of joining the fair, but said that his MPK’s participation may also depend on the availability of the raw materials to make their snacks.

“It is however, a good opportunity for us to promote our products, as we have yet to get a proper place to showcase them and let alone, to market them,” he said. InsyaAllah, hopefully by then we would have sufficient raw materials to make our products by that time, so we may be able to participate in the first ever biggest fair in the district,” he added.
