MUSLIMS in the sultanate will once again receive dates as part of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Kurnia Peribadi (personal gift) for Ramadhan.

Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) said each Muslim in Brunei will receive a 300-grammes box of dates that are expected to reach Muara Port in a chilled container this week.

The dates, which weigh a total of 154 tonnes, are of the safawy variety from the Al Madinah Dates Company in Saudi Arabia.

The distribution of dates is an annual project facilitated by YSHHB, with the dates given as food for breaking the fast.

A meeting was held at the YSHHB complex yesterday to announce the handling and distribution methods of the dates.

The meeting discussed the appointment of secretariat members and committee members for the processes involved in the distribution of dates with government agencies, including the Department of Royal Customs and Excise, Ports Department, Royal Brunei Armed Forces and Royal Brunei Police Force.

Representatives from the different district offices were also present at the meeting, which was chaired by Managing Director of YSHHB Hj Brahim Hj Ismail.

The distribution of dates will take place in a ceremony before grassroots leaders give out the dates to their residents.

The Al Madinah Dates Company will continue to supply the Kurma Kurnia Peribadi following a three-year contract that was renewed in 2014.

Since 1992, the dates were distributed through the Ministry of Education before YSHHB took over the responsibility in 1995.
