TWO local men were each sentenced to serve a jail term yesterday for committing theft-related offences while they were released on bail.

Hj Awg Sharol Ali, 39, was sentenced to 10 months in jail while co-accused Inayatullah Matasin, 20, was punished with a 26-month imprisonment term with effect from March 17 this year, the date when they were remanded. The duo was involved in two theft charges in March when they went to a house in Kg Tanjong Nangka on March 11 and stole a gas cylinder, followed by another theft of an air-conditioner and furniture from a house on Jalan Beribi sometime in March.

On two occasions, Inayatullah acted alone when he stole a Toyota Kijang in the early hours of March 2 after playing computer games at a cybercafe in Gadong. He also stole a car audio player from a car parked at a flat on Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama sometime between March 10 and March 14.

In their mitigation, Hj Awg Sharol told the court that he committed the crime to provide for his family and children after his attempts at finding employment failed.

The co-accused, Inayatullah, told the court that the reason he committed the offence was to help Hj Awg Sharol support his family.

Earlier in March, both Hj Awg Sharol and Inayatullah had pleaded guilty to the charges and they were released on court bail pending a further mention of the case that was scheduled for March 10, for their statement of facts to be read in open court.

However, when both men did not turn up in court, the court issued a warrant of arrest against them following the application made by deputy public prosecutor Didi-Nuraza Latiff.

Hj Awg Sharol was subsequently arrested on March 13 around the Pizza Hut building in Rimba followed by Inayatullah’s arrest on March 14 when the defendant was found around the vicinity of the Old Airport.
