THE Brunei Malay Teachers Association (PGGMB) will be publishing a book that highlights its roles and achievements 80 years after its establishment, said its president in an interview with The Brunei Times.

Hj Antin Ahad said as one of the oldest associations in the country, PGGMB has played a major role in paving the way for education in the past up to the present.

“We plan to publish 1,000 books first in the preliminary stages and we hope that the book will be ready by May 5,” he said.

They also plan to distribute the books to PGGMB members.

The books will be published by Ezy Printing Services & Trading Company Sdn Bhd.

Established in 1937 and registered in 1939, PGGMB is a teachers’ association prioritising welfare and professional Malay teachers in line with the vision and mission of PGGMB.

The book will be divided into three sections, each section representing an era for PGGMB, he said. The first era will focused on the year 1939 to 1959. Second era will focus on the year 1960 to 1989, while the final era focuses on PGGMB’s achievement from the year 1990 onwards.

In the 1930s, PGGMB leaders were made up of schools leaders and teachers, he said.

The first section will highlight the founding members of PGGMB such as the late Dato Paduka Marsal Maun and executive council members such as Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Dr Hj Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Hj Umar.

In 1936, as the first local Superintendent of Malay Education, Dato Marsal moved the religious education into the regular education curriculum, Hj Antin said.

The second era continues to highlight the roles of PGGMB’s Supreme council members.

He said the book is aimed at showcasing the roles and responsibilities of the supreme council members and administrative committee members in the administration of PGGMB and in implementation of various activities and project in the fields of education, finance, buildings and estates, capitals and investments, welfare, sports, social and culture and religious activities.

In the second era, PGGMB pioneers also successfully developed businesses according to their abilities and skills, Hj Antin said adding that during that period PGGMB acquired several land and properties for investment purposes.

PGGMB is now in the third era (1989 onwards), said the president.

“We continue to actively increase our economic activities to ensure steady flow of income and improve our finances,” he said.

In 2013, PGGMB ventured into its first profit-sharing upscale residential project in a tie-up with local developer Stratacom Global.

The project, formerly known as PGGMB’s Taman Puri and Wisma Puri, is now called ‘Lanesborough Residences’ and features 31 villas and 20 apartments at Kg Telanai.
