A LOCAL man was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment yesterday at the Magistrates’ Court for stealing a car.

Shahrin Hj Tarang, 42, had earlier pleaded guilty to stealing a car alongside two other co-defendants on the morning of January 7 of this year.

The offence had been committed in the vicinity of Kg Sungai Besar along Jln Kota Batu.

Shahrin is the only one of the trio who pleaded guilty as his co-defendants, 37 year-old Harisin Hj Raub and 40 year-old Norazalina Abdullah had claimed trial after pleading not guilty to the charges of car theft.

In delivering the sentence, the presiding magistrate Azrimah Hj Abd Rahman had taken a starting point of twelve months’ imprisonment but reduced it to eight months after taking the defendant’s guilty plea at first instance into account which saved the court time and expenses.

Under section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22, the offence of theft carries a punishment of up to three years’ imprisonment with fine.
