BRUNEI was recently invited to observe the Meeting of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Global Parliamentary Network in Japan, where parliamentary officials convened to discuss common challenges.

The sultanate was represented by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin.

Organised jointly by the OECD and the National Diet of Japan at the International Conference Room of the House of Representatives, it was the first meeting to take place in Asia involving 25 countries, including all ASEAN nations.

“The Meeting of the OECD Global Parliamentary Network in Tokyo brought me the opportunity to meet various parliamentarians from Japan, Europe and ASEAN,” said YB Pehin Dato Goh.

During the two-day event held on April 12 and 13 in Tokyo, he met with various high-ranking politicians including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as well as Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Motoo Hayashi.

Hayashi is also the secretary-general of the Japan-Brunei Parliamentary Friendship Promotion League.

YB Pehin Dato Goh said the meeting also enabled him to learn from other parliamentarians in sessions that discussed issues such as the ‘Global Economic Outlook’, ‘Women as the Driver of Economic Growth’ and ‘Disaster Risk Management’.

The event also involved discussions on regional challenges and a luncheon hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

“The arrangement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (was) absolutely wonderful... I felt the hospitality spirit, ‘Omotenashi’ of Japan, and I would like to convey my gratitude to those who prepared for the meeting,” said YB Pehin Dato Goh.
