A REGIMENTAL Police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane yesterday after he was found guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl two years ago.

In delivering his sentencing, High Court Judge Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong said that even though the defendant, Mohammad Amirol Hj Abdul Razak, had a clean record, a minimum sentence wouldn’t be appropriate after taking into consideration serious aggravating factors, namely that the defendant had abused the trust reposed in him as a member of the Regimental Police.

The court said the defendant, who was in uniform, was able to take Miss X and her sister away from the safety of their home because he convinced the girls’ parents that he was carrying out his duty to bring Miss X’s sister to see the adjutant.

Another aggravating factor that Justice Chong noted was the wide gap between the age of the defendant, who is 30 years old and a married man, and the age of Miss X as well as Miss X being subjected to further degradation and humiliation of being forced to perform oral sex. The court considered a sentence of 15 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane appropriate in the circumstances of this case.

“The paramount consideration must be the public interest in the protection of young girls from falling victim to offences of this nature. The sentence must be of sufficient severity to punish and deter,” said the court.

During the trial, Mohammad Amirol was represented by Hj Muhammad Zainidi Hj Abd Hamid and Siti Rozaimaerlenny DSLJ Abd Rahman. Deputy public prosecutor Sharon Yeo appeared for the prosecution.
