Woman fined for possession of untaxed cigarettes

A LOCAL woman was imposed with an $18,000 fine yesterday after she admitted to possession of untaxed cigarettes.

The defendant Norain Sere was brought in for questioning on April 14 this year after customs officers inspected her home at the Kuala Belait Police barracks and found a total of 47 cartons and one packet of cigarettes of various brands.

During the investigation, Norain admitted that the cigarettes belonged to her and she had purchased it in Limbang, Sarawak in Malaysia.

She further admitted that the cigarettes were meant to be sold off to the public.

The total excise duty that was due for the cigarettes was $2,285.

During the proceedings yesterday, the court ordered the defendant to pay the fines by October 17 or serve the three months and two weeks in jail for in-default of payment.

The court further ordered for all of the seized cigarettes to be forfeited to the state.
