THE Borneo Research Centre (PenBorneo) continued its series of talks on history to equip students and teachers with the skills to analyse historical facts.

Senior Lecturer cum Director of the Continuing Education Centre at Universiti Brunei Darussalam Dr Yabit Alas yesterday delivered a talk titled “History of the ‘Awang’ and ‘Abang’ Titles in the Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak Context”.

About 50 participants comprising students, teachers and lecturers from secondary schools and higher education institutions attended the talk.

The talk series also aimed to promote PenBorneo as a central source of historical references.

In an interview, PenBorneo History Officer cum event chairperson Mardiah Hj Ramli said there were plans for the centre to organise more talks in August and November this year.

“We’re trying to invite guest speakers from overseas, especially Borneo, as this would be relevant to our centre.

“Besides promoting PenBorneo, we also want to expand the centre’s network, and holding such talks is one way to do so,” she said.

According to Mardiah, PenBorneo was also planning roadshows at higher education institutions, as part of its efforts to further promote the centre and increase its number of visitors.

The history officer said all visitors were welcomed to the centre, particularly academics.

“There are a lot of materials (at the centre) which haven’t been tapped into.

“We have manuscripts, records and books on Borneo, as well as old letters, which are premier resources which can assist them in their academic writing,” she said.
