HRH Princess ‘Azemah in Let’s Walk/Run 2016 event

HER Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah participated in the “Lets Walk/Run Ladies 2016” event at the Colonnade in Jerudong Park yesterday.

The princess, who was also the guest of honour, finished the 5km category in second place with a time of 27 minutes.

The all-female event, organised by Women Graduates Association of Brunei Darussalam (PSW), was held to mark International Women’s Day.

Speaking on the sidelines of the charity event, PSW president Pg Hjh Zabaidah Hj Kamaluddin said the observance day marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. It is also a global day celebrating the achievements of women regardless of their age, social, economic or cultural backgrounds.

“It started of as a struggle for groups of women in the West but then as years went by it became as a symbol and for us in Brunei, it symbolises how far we’ve come from,” she added.

Pg Hjh Zabaidah said the event aims to empower women in Brunei –young and old, to celebrate their achievements while also giving confidence to young women and fight stereotypes”.

Divided into three categories - 10km, 5km and 3km, the top three winners for each category were awarded with a certificate and cash prize. Bagging first prize of $600 in the 10km category was Airince Liam with a time of 39 minutes 41 seconds

Tamsin Humes secured the top spot in the 5km category, while Fenty Sutiono crossed the finish line first in the 3km category.

According to Pg Hjh Zabaidah, the money raised during the event will go towards helping families in need as well as fund some of the association’s programmes.

Yesterday’s run also saw Vice President II of the Women’s Council of Brunei Darussalam Datin Hjh Masni Hj Mohd Ali awarded with a certificate for being the most senior participant at the run. “We must support healthy lifestyle and healthy ageing,” said the 70-year-old.

Prior to the event, a mass aerobics session was conducted by an instructor from Fitness Zone Brunei.
