A NEW public speaking club has been established for youth under the age of 18.

The public speaking club called Brunei Gavel Club will hold its first demo meeting on April 17 between 10am to 12pm at the basement classroom of the Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

The club currently has seven registered members that served as the executive committee of the club.

In a phone interview, Club President Mohd Farhan Hj Jafar Ali said the club was established to provide a platform for youth under the age of 18 who are too young to join Toastmasters but have no gavel club in their school to develop their public speaking and leadership skills.

“The goal is for members to learn and enjoy by having quality meetings with good speeches and good evaluations,” said Mohd Farhan, who is also an undergraduate from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

When asked how public speaking has benefitted him, he said that it has helped him when making presentations for his modules and gave him the confidence to work in events as an emcee.

“Public speaking is a necessary tool in our live nowadays.

“Joining a club doesn’t guarantee that you will become the best speaker, but it provides you with the platform and environment to develop the skills to become one,” he added.

According to Mohd Farhan, 30 students from Chung Hwa Middle School, Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College and other schools had expressed interest in attending their first meeting.
