KAMPUNG Sungai Bunga Village Consultative Council (MPK) is looking to add two new activities into its existing tourism packages under the One Village One Product initiative, said the council’s secretary.

Zaini Hj Salleh said the new activities will include a “river cruise” and traditional boat racing or regatta along the Brunei River.

“If tourists opt for it under their package, the river cruise will take them via an engine-powered boat along the river. They will get to have a firsthand experience on travelling via boat going to and fro from markets, and other places” he said.

“We will take the tourists to markets to buy fresh crabs, fish and even ambulung (processed sago) for example.”

Guests will then be brought to the Seri Tanjung Homestay for a home cooking experience with local families of the village after which visitors will be dining with the locals.

For tourists that are looking for a more physical experience, he said that they can try the MPK’s regatta activity.

“We (MPK members) will be there as the instructors of course just to make sure everything is ok during the tourists’ regatta experience. If they wish to race we will look to also facilitate that, but the new activities (regatta and river cruise) are yet to be finalised,” Zaini said.

He said the purpose for introducing regatta is to allow foreign and local tourists to participate in one of the main sports of Brunei which was held in the Brunei river more regularly decades ago.

He said tourists and local visitors who wish to include the new activities in their packages will be able to do so on the Airbnb website with prices varying according to what customers want in their packages.

Zaini added the activities will be introduced when the MPK Sungai Bunga hosts this year’s home stay for the ASEAN Korea Centre’s ASEAN Homestay Programme.

“Last year Malaysia hosted for the ASEAN Homestay Programme, this year it will be us as we (MPK Sungai Bunga) were appointed by Tourism Department to provide the homestay and we are looking to introduce it (the new activities) then,” he said.

The ASEAN-Korea Centre is an intergovernmental organization with the aim to promote exchanges among Korea and the ten ASEAN Member States.
