Man pleads not guilty to smuggling 84 litres of diesel

A LOCAL man and a transport company registered in Brunei pleaded not guilty at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday to attempting to smuggle 84 litres of diesel out of Brunei.

During yesterday’s proceedings Hj Ibrahim Hj Awg Damit who also represented his company ADBS Sdn Bhd claimed trial over charges of instructing one of the company drivers to transport the diesel in an additional tank under a Mitsubishi bus from Brunei to Miri, Malaysia on June 26, 2013.

The bus had been stopped at the Sungai Tujoh control post at around 5.20pm for inspection where enforcement officers found the contraband fuel underneath the bus.

The presiding chief magistrate Muhammed Faisal PDJLD DSP Hj Kefli yesterday fixed the trial to run between June 27 and June 30, 2016. Under section 140(1)(g) of the Customs Order 2006, the offence carries a minimum penalty of a $10,000 fine and a maximum fine of $500,000 as well as imprisonment of up to three years.
