A Bruneian permanent resident was yesterday charged at the Magistrates’ Court with assaulting another man in the mental health ward of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital (RIPAS).

On April 5, 39-year-old Salman Arshad was alleged to have punched 32-year-old Mohd Yusli Abd Rahman on the left side of his face following an altercation.

No plea was recorded, and the next mention of the case will be on April 12.

Bail was set at $3,000 or one local surety, with the defendant required to report to a supervising officer at the central police station in the capital on Monday.

As the defendant was unable to find a bailor in time, Presiding Magistrate Pg Shahyzul Khairuddien Pg Abd Rahman ordered him to remain in remand at Jerudong Prison until at least Saturday, when he will have another opportunity to find a bailor.

The defendant is facing up to three years in prison with a fine if convicted of the offence under section 323 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22.
