PARTICIPANTS of a workshop on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) took a closer look at the health services provided at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah Health Centre in Kg Rimba yesterday.

The visit was part of the four-day workshop from April 4-7 organised by the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

It was also held as part of the Epidemiology and Control modules under the Master of Public Health programme at PAPRSB IHS which aim to provide the students with epidemiologic and public health knowledge and skills to investigate, prevent and control NCDs in different settings.

Comprising around 15 people, the visit saw the participation of students and representatives from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.

“We are here to observe the services provided by doctors and nurses to clients, especially in the effort to fight against NCDs,” said Dr Nik Ani Afiqah Tuah, lecturer (Public Health) of PAPRSB IHS.

Dr Nik underscored the importance of community-based intervention and strategy in efforts to combat NCDs in the country as it is cost-effective.

“We can’t rely on management or treatment, so we have to do some prevention. And through (the visit) this afternoon, the students can acquire a better understanding about the health screening programme held by the Ministry of Health and provided in all health centres in the country,” she said.

Launched in 2013 at only two health centres in Sungai Liang and Pengkalan Batu, the health screening programme aims to detect chronic diseases and to prevent ill health or complications in people who are asymptomatic at age 40 and above.
