BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
THREE Thai nationals are each facing a $1 million fine, imprisonment term of up to 30 years and not less than five strokes of the cane after they pleaded guilty yesterday for their role in exploiting a 17-year-old girl through prostitution.
The victim, also a Thai national, had sought for help from her aunt who was in Brunei, the 47-year-old defendant in this case, sometime in February or March this year. The victim needed about 13,000 baht (approximately $500) as her father was involved in a car accident last year which left him with critical injuries.
The woman offered to help the victim engage in sexual services. The defendant facilitated the victim’s journey to Brunei from Thailand and paid her ticket. In return, the victim had to pay the woman $2,000 which would include the cost of the airfare, accommodation, food and daily expenses.
Upon the victim’s arrival in Brunei on March 5, the victim stayed with the defendant in Kg Selayun. To pay off her debt to the defendant, the victim engaged in sexual services.
The woman brought in one of the co-accused, a 46-year-old man, to look for clients for the victim to have paid sex with. Another man, a 44-year-old Thai national, had also agreed to take a fee between $10 and $15 for transporting the girl.
The court document stated that the girl would take $5 from the $30 she earned from each customer and the remaining $25 went to the woman to pay off her debt. At times, the victim would not receive any money from the sexual service as she had to pay $5 as commission to one of the men for introducing her to clients.
The first defendant is facing a fine of up to $1 million, imprisonment term of up to 30 years in jail and not less than five strokes of the cane for the human trafficking charge, while the penalty for living off from the earnings of the victim that she was exploiting, the 47-year-old woman is facing up to five years in jail and a fine of $20,000.
Meanwhile, the 46-year-old co-accused is also facing up to $1 million in fines, up to 30 years in jail and not less than five strokes of the cane for profiting from exploiting the trafficked person. He is also facing five years in jail and a fine of $20,000 for hiring the underage girl for prostitution.
For transporting the girl to where she was to provide sexual services, the 44-year-old defendant is facing $1 million in fines, up to 30 years in jail and not less than five strokes of the cane.
The trio has been ordered to be further remanded at Jerudong Prison pending the next mention of the case on today for their mitigation and sentencing before the Intermediate Court.
