NEGLIGENCE of employers can put the health and even the lives of their employees at risk, said a senior health and safety official at University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) recently.

Head of Office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) at UBD Hj Hazilan Hj Ramli – speaking on health, safety and environment at the workplace – said that most work related injuries, accidents or ill health are preventable but still regularly occur due to negligence of the employer or management in ensuring compliance and conformance of the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) policy.

The OSHE head said that accidents also happen frequently due to improper arrangement, implementation and monitoring of the WSH policy.

Hj Hazilan emphasised that health and safety should be made the central focus in every organisation’s core business or operation agenda.

In a statement issued by UBD, he said that safety and health must be made part of people’s daily living culture and should not be limited to just the home environment but also incorporated into the workplace or learning environment.

The talk – organised by the OSHE of UBD – was conducted by Senior Labour Inspector from the Labour Department under Ministry of Home Affairs Mohammad Noorfaizal Hj Osmena.

Held at the university’s Chancellor Hall, the talk also saw a sharing session on Brunei Darussalam’s Workplace Health and Safety Order and Regulations.

The session hoped to equip participants with health and safety knowledge.

The event was also held to highlight the importance of the roles and responsibilities of UBD employers or managers to create a safe working environment to protect the employees and student’s health and wellbeing, said UBD in the statement.

Participants then took part in a question and answer session with the health and safety speakers on relevant issues on workplace safety and health.
