Minister receives Sarawak, Jordan delegations

THE Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports received visits from two delegations yesterday at the ministry’s building at Jalan Kebangsaan Lama.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awang Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof first received a delegation from Sarawak. The delegation was led by Sarawak Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom.
During the visit, the Sarawak Social Development Minister shared preparations made by Sarawak for the 18th Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA).
They also exchanged views on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the field of sports.
A briefing was then delivered by a representative from the Sarawak delegation on the arrangement of the 18th SUKMA.
Also present was MCYS Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka Dr Hj Affendy Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Hj Abidin.
Sarawak will be hosting SUKMA 2016 from July 22 to 31. The meet will comprise of 24 sporting events.
Brunei has competed in nine SUKMA games since 1996. In 2014, Brunei collected a gold medal in the Karate-do event.
The MCYS minister then received a call from the Royal Jordanian National Defense College led by Brigadier General Salah Almajali.
The delegation exchanged views on matters relating to the tasks and responsibilities (of both parties) in addressing issues of peace and harmony.
Both sides also discussed efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
The delegation was then briefed by MCYS Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka Dr Hj Affendy on the four strategic areas of the ministry namely social security, strengthening the national identity, resilient and competitive youth and excellence in sports.
This was then followed by briefings from Acting Director of the National Service Programme (PKBN) Major (Rtd) Mohamad Dollah and Acting Director of Social Services Rostinah POKSSP Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Tahir.
Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah also received a courtesy call from the Jordan delegation at the Bolkiah Garrison on March 31.
Both sides expressed satisfaction on bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries and discussed prospects for further strengthening cooperation.
They also exchanged views on regional security challenges in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, read the MinDef statement.
The delegation was also briefed on the functions and roles of the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) and on Brunei’s defence policies.
