A NEW museum in Belait district is slated to open sometime in July this year, said the director of Museums Department yesterday.

Pg Dr Karim Pg Hj Osman said the department is planning to open the museum at the Belait District Officer’s former residence that has been gazetted under the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act 1967.

“We will use the building as Belait’s museum, planning has gone smooth and _InsyaAllah _opening is scheduled for July,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Brunei Shipwreck App and Education Pack launch yesterday, he said the new museum will cater to residents in the Belait district.

Pg Dr Karim said the opening of museums at each district was suggested in previous Legislative Council deliberations a few years ago.

The museum will feature four galleries – Flora and Fauna gallery, Archeology and History of Belait district, Cultural gallery and History of Belait and its early administration.

He added that there will also be a section about Brunei Shell Petroleum, while temporary exhibitions will also be featured at the museum.

“We will hold a temporary gallery there and will change it to another gallery within two to three months,” he said, adding that the building is located near the beach.

“It has a very nice view, very near to the beach,” he said.

He said it is the Museums Department’s role to bring cultural and historical properties nearer to people.

“Museums provide a unique interactive experience of getting up close to things and people in other districts should not be excluded from this,” he said.

Pg Dr Karim added that he will be meeting the Temburong District Officer on Saturday to discuss potential location for the Temburong museum.
