A LOCAL youth was sentenced to a $2,500 fine at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday after pleading guilty to possessing untaxed cigarettes.

Mohd Khalil Syaffiq Hj Ahmad Sufri, 21, had attempted to bring 69 packets of cigarettes into the country at the Kuala Lurah Control Post on March 25, 2016, alongside a friend who was driving the Chevrolet Cruze they were in.

Upon inspection, customs officers found the contraband inside the car despite the defendant stating that he had no goods to declare earlier when asked.

The defendant, who is employed with The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, then admitted during investigations that he was the one who was in possession of the contraband and that he had purchased them in Limbang, Malaysia for his friends.

During his mitigation, the defendant admitted that he had made a mistake and pleaded for a lenient sentence.

The presiding senior magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah Hj Mohd Hussain ordered the defendant to pay the fine in its entirety within the day which the defendant duly did yesterday after the sentence had been handed down.
