Brunei Toastmasters to compete in Sandakan
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
TWO Toastmasters from Brunei will compete against the best Toastmasters International Clubs in the Division K level, which will take place in Sandakan on April 10.
The Toastmasters – Pranika Lama and Julius Hong – will represent Brunei and compete against Sabah in the Division level.
They were announced winners of the club’s annual contests last Sunday at the Multi-purpose Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Two categories were competed - International Speech and Table Topics, a longstanding Toastmasters tradition intended to help members develop their ability to organise their thoughts quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic.
UBD PhD student Pranika, who was named champion in the International Speech category, talked about how appreciative people should be towards their parents in her ‘Open Your Eyes’ speech.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, Pranika said she joined Toastmasters in 2014 as a charter member of UBD Toastmasters Club to gain experience but developed a passion for public speaking over time.
“I mainly join the contests for experience. Speaking during a context is an entirely differently ballgame than speaking other times. Under self-inflicted pressure and expectations, I try to see how much I can push myself and if I can perform better than the past performances,” said the 24-year-old.
She added that other Toastmasters contestants inspired her in finding her interests in public speaking.
Meanwhile, Julius Hong won the Table Topic category for speaking on the impromptu topic of ‘Cherish Yesterday, Dream Tomorrow, Live Today’.
A total of eight participants competed in International Speech category while seven participants competed in Table Topics category.
The contest was held to provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking abilities and to provide an opportunity to learn by observing the more proficient speakers who have benefited from their Toastmasters training.
At the end of the event, each participant received certificates of appreciation whilst winning trophies and certificates were presented by Area Director Allen Ang.
