Over 1,000 people raise funds for the blind

MORE than 1,200 people took part in the White Cane Charity Run 2016 that raised $13,000 for the Brunei Darussalam National Association for the Blind (BDNAB).

The association said the contributions from the public and participants will be used to buy special aids for the blind such as white canes and Braille machines and embossers as well as publish Braille books.

The run, which began and ended at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Indoor Stadium, was organised by BDNAB in collaboration with the Department of Co-Curriculum Education under the Ministry of Education.

According to Md Hamzi Omar, vice chairman of the run, the run aimed to give an opportunity to members of BDNAB to develop healthy living practices through exercise as well as an opportunity for the public to perform good deeds.

He said through the event, BDNAB hoped to “raise awareness on the dangers of diabetes, which can also be a cause of blindness.”

The winner of the men’s 10km category was Yong Khong Wei with a time of 41:51, while in the women’s category, Yvette J M Kortekaas came in first with a time of 46:11.

In the men’s 5km category, Razali Sabli won first place with a time of 18:15, while the women’s category was won by Nikmatul Fathinah Hj Ismail with a time of 24:40.

There were six categories at the event, which were open to the public as well as special needs people.

They included a men’s and women’s category 10km run as well as 5km run categories for men and women respectively.

There was also a fun run for the public and a special category run for individuals with special needs.

Present as guest of honour was Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.
