THE construction of the Brunei Cancer Centre building is on track and is expected to begin operations this year said the health minister yesterday.

Construction of the centre which started in 2012 is located near Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC).

Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Dr Hj Zulkarnain Hj Hanafi told the council that the building should be completed soon, should there be no obstructions ahead.

He was responding to LegCo member Yang Berhormat Orang Kaya Jaya Putera Dato Paduka Hj Muhammad Taha Abdul Rauf where he suggested reducing costs by treating patients in the hospitals here as expenses were great. “A large sum of money, $55-million was allocated for fiscal year 2015/2016 to pay for the cost of sending patients overseas including purchases of medicines,” the LegCo member said. The health minister went on to say that since the last 10 years, under the guidance of His Majesty, a number of “centres of excellence” have been established in the sultanate.

These centres include the National Heart Centre, the Brunei Cancer centre, the Women and Children Centre in Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital and the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation centre.

“It is our wish in the Ministry of Health to alleviate the financial burden of the government and to bring ease to Brunei citizens and residents by having such centres of excellence in the sultanate,” said YB Dato Paduka Dr Hj Zulkarnain.
