DO must stay in own district
DISTRICT officers are required to settle down in their assigned districts for the duration of their service to ensure that the government is officially represented at all times, said the minister of home affairs (MoHA) yesterday.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong was responding to the matter of district officers opting to take up residence outside their districts and commuting to work instead of residing in their designated districts brought up by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah Hj Mohd Jaafar.
The minister said that no such directive or instruction for district officers to not stay in their district was ever issued by the ministry.
He pointed out that if the district officer is unable to perform this portion of their duty considering circumstances which require them to be away from their assigned district, the task of official representation of the government should be passed down along the chain of command.
In fact, said the minister, the ministry has constantly stressed on the need for district officers to integrate themselves within the community in their districts and be present, available and accessible for the public in their assigned districts at all times.
The minister reiterated that the district officers can be relieved of their duties in consideration of other tasks assigned to them or for other matters and only after an appropriate substitute has been nominated.
