Mosque building fund surpasses $2m mark

THE Mosque Building Fund has reached $2,374,900.59 since it was introduced in June last year, said the Minister of Religious Affairs yesterday.

During the 12th session of the Legislative Council, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awang Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awang Othman said that the fund has increased drastically this year as more people are coming forward to donate.

“The fund collected within two months this year is $746,752.87, this is an increase of more than $300, 000 every month,” the minister responded to one of the questions by the LegCo member, Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah Haji Mohd Jaafar.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Awang Badaruddin said that many government servants are keen to become a regular donor for the fund.

He said that there are many ways of contributing to the fund and deduction salary from the government officials and servants or fixed pledging is one of the renowned methods.

“Only 41 people registered for this in September last year. But it has increased to 4,364 people after five months,” he said.

He said that the amount collected from this fixed pledging of government amounted to $152,805.20.

“Out of 4,364 people, seven of them are among non-Muslim donors.”

InsyaAllah within two years, the mosque building fund could increase to $3 to $4 million,” said the minister, adding that the fund could be used to build mosques with a standard that is equivalent to the collection.
