Media reminded to be more responsible

LOCAL media are advised to be responsible in providing accurate and credible reports to the public so as to avoid any ‘misunderstanding’ locally and internationally.

The advisory was issued following several articles published by local online media that were taken out of context.

Addressing the matter, the Prime Minister’s Office would like to refer to some of the articles published in local media on the discussion in the Legislative Council, in which certain statements reported seem to imply that the government is exercising a general salary reduction for its employees, as has been widely commented through social media and the general public.

The statement said that the articles have attracted negative attention from international media as well as social media.

In this regard, the Ministry of Finance had issued a statement to clarify the matter.

The Prime Minister’s Office in its statement reiterated that the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has never issued such statement. Any statement concerning salary reduction across the civil service is baseless and unfounded.

The statement concluded by saying that in receiving and before imparting any information, print media and social media users are reminded to ensure the information received is accurate and verified.
