Refrain from labelling people greedy: MKM
THE President of Brunei’s Council on Social Welfare (MKM) reminded the public not to label or judge people as “greedy”.
“The public may judge or label people who take ‘free stuff’ as greedy... but can’t we see that there are still many people who are in need of help? Instead of judging and humiliating them, we should help each other,” said Datin Paduka Hjh Intan Hj Mohd Kassim on the sidelines of the handing over donation event in Temburong yesterday.
MKM organised the ‘Titian Sejambak Kasih’ charity drive in preparation for this year’s Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebrations.
Datin Paduka Hjh Intan added: “They take ‘free stuff’ like food and clothing, not only for themselves but they do it for their family. Not everyone can afford to buy the things they want.”
Yesterday, hundreds of people in Temburong flocked to Utama Bumiputra Complex in Bangar town yesterday to get used clothes distributed by MKM.
More than 100 boxes containing used clothes were brought to the district to be distributed to more than 50 underprivileged families for Hari Raya this year.
The MKM president told The Brunei Times that the Hari Raya charity drive started in January and the response from the public has been overwhelming.
Around 400 boxes carrying some 10,000 used clothes had been collected within two months and the organisation is still accepting donations until May, 31.
“We didn’t expect that we would receive this much. Actually we were only asking for donations in terms of Hari Raya clothes, but we also received t-shirts that can be worn for daily basis,” she said, adding that media helps the organisation a lot in disseminating the news.
She said that they distributed the clothes early so that recipients could fix and alter their Hari Raya clothes before Syawal.
“People usually donate clothes or fabric to the underprivileged during fasting month, it’s quite late to give them during Ramadhan as they might want to wear them (for Hari Raya Aidil Fitri) instead of saving it for next year’s celebration,” said the president.
She went on to say that there is a need to conduct research on poverty so that the public will realise the existence of poverty in Brunei Darussalam.
One of the members of the public who came to the multipurpose hall, Zuraidah Osman, 34, said that she took the opportunity to get some clothes for her children.
“I have five children and getting clothes for them every year is quite difficult as we have to spend more on necessities such as food and this at least can reduce the financial burden,” said the housewife from Kg Rataie.
The organisation along with penghulu of Mukim Bangar, Hj Abdul Rahman Hj Merusin also visited three underprivileged families in Kg Menengah, comprising single mothers to handover donations.
Datin Paduka Hjh Intan said that the remaining boxes will be distributed before fasting month in June.
