GOVERNMENT run institutions and private sectors should adopt a standardised weekend break to reduce truancies in schools, a Legislative Council member proposed yesterday.

Yang Berhormat Hj Awang Ahmad Morshidi Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Hj Awang Abdul Rahman suggested standardising the weekend breaks to either Saturday and Sunday or Friday and Saturday for both government and private sectors.

He said there have been many complaints raised by workers and civil servants – particularly those with families – who have trouble returning to their homes or villages as they will have to report back to work the next day.

He added that families who return to their respective villages or home countries would bring their children along and would choose to skip school on Saturday, leading to a truancy problem.

He said standardising the weekend breaks would also allow families to spend more time together.

It would also allow everyone to be well rested, which could lead to a positive impact in student’s academic performance and parent’s productivity.
