‘Need to re-evaluate allowance for undergrads’

STUDENT allowances for undergraduates should be re-evaluated to reflect the increase in the cost of living in Brunei.

During the session, Yang Berhormat Hj Gapor @ Hj Mohd Daud Karim said that the Ministry of Education currently provides undergraduates from public higher education institutions with a monthly allowance of $350 and a book allowance of $250 but these figures need to be re-evaluated to account for the increasing cost of living.

During the session, he also asked if the Ministry of Education has any plans to build schools, particularly at the national housing schemes in Meragang, Tanah Jambu and Mengkubau .

The LegCo member also raised the issue of providing opportunities to civil servants to further their education in higher education institutions, particularly to civil servants in the third and fourth division to increase the number of human resources with higher qualifications.

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman did not respond with regards to the re-evaluation of student allowances and the establishment of schools in the national housing schemes in Meragang, Tanah Jambu and Mengkubau .

Regarding the issue of providing civil servants with further education, the minister said that there is no restriction on all government officers and staff to apply for the in-service training scheme as long as they meet the requirements required.

The minister added that the ministry will prioritise providing education to officers based on their merits and potential in their respective fields to fulfill the objective of increasing the competency, knowledge and professionalism of those in the civil service.

He added that, according to figures from 2006 to December 2015, a total of 2,646 officers from section 3 and below have been approved to participate in the local in-service training scheme while 684 officers were approved for the overseas in-service training scheme which includes studying in various levels and areas including national diplomas, higher diplomas, degrees and masters.
