A LOCAL man was detained yesterday to help in an investigation following a reported theft at the Kg Kilanas Mosque.

The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), in a statement yesterday, said that the investigation was filed under Section 380 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22) for theft in a building.

According to the RBPF, they received a report on the theft of five boxes of funds at the mosque on March 9.

An officer of the Kg Kilanas Mosque Affairs made the report after a member of the public gave information regarding a man who was behaving suspiciously near one of the fund boxes at the mosque.

In the statement, RBPF established that the incident happened on March 7 and 8 as seen from the mosque’s CCTV which showed a man stealing from the mosque’s fund boxes on two occasions.

The video showing the man trying to steal from a green fund box at the said mosque went viral on the Whatsapp social media application yesterday morning.

When contacted by The Brunei Times, the officer at the mosque declined to comment on the issue.

The RBPF statement also said that, in an effort to curb crimes and securing the safety of members of the public and properties, CCTVs have been installed in most public places to assist the RBPF in any investigations if a crime is reported.
