DARUSSALAM Enterprise (DARe) will help women entrepreneurs by providing them with the experience and expertise of some of the most successful businesswomen in Brunei.

The Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office said DARe has successful businesswomen among their board members who can help empower women entrepreneurs through the development of specific programmes.

“Their experiences and expertise will be of great help to DARe in formulating programmes which will help empower local entrepreneurs, including businesswomen through focus sessions which will be held in the near future,” Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar said.

The minister was responding to Legislative Council (LegCo) Member Yang Berhormat Datin Paduka Hajah Zasia Sirin, who asked how the SME Centre will carry out its role to help women in business.

At yesterday’s meeting of the 12th Session of the Legislative Council, YB Datin Hjh Zasia said in helping entrepreneurs, the SME centre should also be looking at businesswomen, some of whom are single mothers.

The minister said 81 per cent, or 13 of its 16 members, of the board of directors in DARe are held by the private sector.

He added that 31 per cent of the board membership, or five of its members, are females.
