THE Ministry of Education (MoE) will continue to be responsive to the needs of human capacity development issues in the country and examine the policies related to government scholarships from time to time with the agencies concerned.

“Such matters will also involve the public directly to identify together the national needs for the workforce and certain sectors,” said Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman in his response to Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah Hj Mohd Jaafar during the 12th LegCo meeting.

YB Dato Hj Abdullah on Tuesday suggested that members of the public such as experts from different fields and professionals should be included in the scholarship committee under the Ministry of Education.

During the proceedings, YB Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi explained the roles and responsibilities of the scholarship committee. He said the committee examines and considers students who are qualified to attend appropriate courses abroad through the government scholarship scheme.

He said among their duties and responsibilities are to ensure coordination and continuity of the scholarship policy with the needs and priorities in terms of human resource development in the government sector, private sector and semi-government sector, to examine the appropriateness and effectiveness of the rules and regulations of the government scholarship with the current situation, duration and place of study and if necessary provide recommendations for changes or amendments from time to time, and to evaluate recommendations submitted by the interviewing panel for the awarding of scholarships.

The committee’s duties also include ensuring that the goals and objectives of criteria for scholarship consideration under the control of the Ministry of Education domestically and abroad are achieved, not only in terms of the quantity of applicants but also their quality from time to time; considering all applications and appeals received by the ministry and evaluating the facilities provided under the scholarship programme such as allowances from time to time.
