A LEGISLATIVE Council (LegCo) member proposed the creation of a child protection agency, saying a more holistic approach was needed to safeguard children’s welfare.

YB Datin Paduka Hjh Salbiah Hj Sulaiman said a centralised body is needed to coordinate policy and all the respective agencies involved in child protection.

“So far we only react to incidents. For instance, when a child dies following a road accident, only then we think of building an overhead bridge or setting up fences. What is required now is proactive action,” she said during the 12th session of LegCo yesterday.

YB Datin Hjh Salbiah cited several incidents of preventable child deaths, such as fires, drowning and road accidents, saying that all these incidents could have been avoided if the right measures were in place.

“I am addressing this issue to the Prime Minister’s Office because I see that no single ministry is fully responsible in this matter. I think that if the government shows serious concern on each case that involves children, then I believe all children in this country can be protected from similar tragedies.”

She said since Brunei has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, more should be done to ensure children’s welfare.
