A LEGISLATIVE Council (LegCo) member has called on Bruneians to start contributing to the country and not be too reliant on the government.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Maharaja Kerna Dato Paduka Seri Hj Yaakub Pehin Orang Kaya Maharaja Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Zainal said Brunei citizens enjoy various facilities courtesy of the government, including schools and healthcare clinics, as well as subsidised rice and fuel.

Delivering his vote of thanks at the 12th LegCo session yesterday, he said citizens of Brunei should ask what they are doing for the country, instead of just what the government has done for them.

“There are many ways to contribute to the country, without remuneration or wages.

“One way is to maintain our health through hygiene in our daily lives,” he added.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Yaakub said residents must be constantly aware and concerned about cleanliness, as it is an easy way to prevent life-threatening diseases that can become a burden for the country.

He added that residents were still in favour of waiting for Municipal Department cleaners for maintenance of such things.

“Filthy situations not only provide a less pleasing environment, they are also more likely to cause a variety of animal-borne diseases such as flies which can cause diarrhoea, mice which carry leptospirosis and mosquitoes that carry dengue,” he said.
