INTERNATIONAL competitions provide a platform for students to represent Brunei and challenge their limits.

This was said by the Vice Chancellor of Institut Teknologi Brunei and the Dean of Faculty of Integrated Technologies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam during interviews with The Brunei Times on the sidelines of the sendoff for students competing in Shell Eco Marathon Asia (SEMA) 2016.

ITB Vice Chancellor Associate Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah Hj Sulaiman said that joining an international competition not only helps bring recognition to the university but also allows the students to challenge their limits and apply the knowledge they’ve learnt during lessons in a real-life situation.

She said winning the competition wasn’t the most important thing, but students should carry themselves professionally as representatives of Brunei.

“It gives them experience not just as competitors in an international competition but how to carry themselves. I think that’s very important, how to not lose hope and be confident,” said Dr Hjh Zohrah.

She added that ITB has been participating actively in a variety of competitions as it provides students an opportunity to grow.

Pg Dr Iskandar Pg Hj Petra, Dean of Faculty of Integrated Technologies at UBD, said an international competition gives students the opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and surpass their own limits toward achieving a common goal. He added that UBD has come very far since they first joined SEMA in 2011.

“They had nothing; they started from scratch and even went to the scrap yard, building things from nothing, and managed to build a car. Now their knowledge keeps on developing and they innovate when they build a car.”

He said whether they win or not this year, the most important thing is that the students do their best and reach the goals they’ve set for themselves.

“I always believe that it’s just a matter of how we train the students in the right way so that they do well and perform well.”
