Turkey envoy visits UNISSA Rector

THE Rector of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) recieved a courtesy call from the High Commisioner of Turkey to Brunei yesterday to discuss potential collaboration opportunities between Brunei and Turkey in the field of education, particularly Islamic studies.

UNISSA’s rector, Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal and High Commissioner, Fikret Oguz Ates discussed the possibilities of having student and staff exchange programmes between UNISSA and higher learning institutions in Turkey.

According to the press release issued, this would increase staff and students’ abilities and skills through learning experiences at the prestigious institutions in Turkey.

Imprinted with the great Uthmaniyah legacy, Turkey has to date, 200 universities which all offer an Islamic learning programme, it said.

In a report last year, the Turkish embassy offered fully-funded scholarships to Bruneians interested in studying in the country.

The scholarship currently on offer is the “Türkiye Scholarships Programme” which covers a monthly stipend, full tuition fees, free one-year Turkish language course if necessary, accommodation, round-trip air ticket and health insurance.

The programme includes a wide range of fields of study such as science, engineering, technology, social sciences, Islamic studies and medical sciences. Present during the visit was Deputy rector of Unissa, Dr Hj Mohammed Hussain Pehin Penyurat Hj Ahmad.The Brunei Times
