No tsunami threat from Indonesian quake

THE earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on Wednesday did not pose any tsunami threat to Brunei, according to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department.

The department told The Brunei Times yesterday that they did not receive any tsunami warnings from any warning centres.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Wednesday.

According to a report by CNN, the quake was centred in the Indian Ocean about 660km southwest of Muara Siberut and roughly 800km west-southwest of Padang, which is on the west coast of Sumatra, the Asian archipelago nation’s largest island.

It hit at a depth of about 24km.

Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency initially reported the quake at a magnitude of 8.3.
