MEMBERS of the public can now go online to search the Language and Literature Bureau’s (DBP) various book collections as well as put items they would like to check out “on hold”.

Mohd Yadey Hazabillah Hj Md Zain, a library officer at the DBP Library Section, told The Brunei Times recently that the DBP had launched its online library catalogue in late November last year.

The search catalogue, he said, can be accessed online at www.librarybrunei.gov.bn.

When a book title search is done, a list of relevant titles are displayed as well as the number of available copies of a book and whether any copies are currently on hold.

Catalogue users can also limit book searches to a specific author, material type, shelf location, language or library branch.

According to Mohd Yadey, anyone who accesses the website will be able to search for books, but only DBP members will be able to put items on hold or book them.

DBP members who have membership cards will be given the password for accessing the system, he added.

Mohd Yadey said that DBP members can put up to five books on hold over a period of 14 days.

Besides containing book collections of all nine DBP branches, the search catalogue also includes library collections of “special libraries” from the Islamic Da’wah Centre, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Brunei History Centre, the Brunei Museums Department and the Attorney General’s Chambers.

“Some of these (special libraries) may have limited access, but members of the public can still generally search for books they have available and see whether the book has been checked out,” Mohd Yadey said.

Mohd Yadey said that at the moment, the online search catalogue was mostly used by students who looked up reference books in DBP’s collections.
