BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
A LOCAL duo was sentenced to prison for house-breaking and theft at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Rahimah Hj Untong, 35, pleaded guilty to committing theft, trespassing on private property and causing criminal damage to private property while her accomplice Jofri Hj Tahir, 45, pleaded guilty to one charge of committing theft.
Rahimah was sentenced to serve 10 months in jail while Jofri was sentenced to eight months.
In mitigation, both of them pleaded for a lenient sentence with Jofri asking not to be imprisoned so he may be able to take care of his elderly mother who is sick.
The duo, along with another accomplice who is still on the run from the authorities, had all gone to a house in Kg Jerudong on January 8, 2016, with the intent to commit theft.
Upon inspecting the house, they found the homeowner’s 12-year-old son still inside.
Undeterred, Jofri rang the door bell which was answered by the 12-year-old boy.
He immediately grabbed the boy’s shoulder in order to restrain him.
Rahimah and the other accomplice then proceeded to enter the house where they stole a gold necklace, a smartphone, a phone charger, a laptop and $40 in cash.
After the incident, the thieves went back to the same house on January 30, 2016, to again commit theft but this time without Jofri.
When they arrived at the house, they proceeded to force open the front door using a screwdriver after ensuring that there was no one inside and ransacked the house.
The homeowner arrived at his house not long after the intruders entered and he gave chase to the both of them but the defendants managed to flee the scene.
Meanwhile, three local men were sentenced to prison terms for house-breaking and theft yesterday at the Intermediate Court.
Mohd Hardi Hamidon, 32, and Haronal Rasid Tamit, 40, were both sentenced to serve two years’ imprisonment while 27-year-old Musa Ismail was sentenced to serve eighteen months in prison.
