Sg Akar charity fund-raiser collects $25K for needy
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
THE Kg Sg Akar Village Legislative Council (MPK) collected more than $25,000 for its charity fund last year, said the village head.
In an interview on the sidelines of a walkathon to celebrate Brunei’s 32nd National Day, Hj Ramlee Hj Md Zain said the MPK was able to achieve the donation amount from village residents’ contributions.
“One of the issues that we face in this village is the large number of residents that are in need of financial aid,” he said.
He added that according to a survey they did last year, Kg Sg Akar has 62 orphans, 66 widows, 82 senior citizens above the age of 75 and 26 head of families who are underprivileged.
Hj Ramlee said 95 per cent of the funds were already distributed to the recipients last year, while the remaining amount of money is kept by the MPK for emergencies.
“Alhamdulilah, we have helped all of these people registered for financial aid from the government (but) as an MPK, we want to do as much as we can to also help ease the financial situation of these individuals,” said the 68-year-old.
Hj Ramlee said the reason for the large number of individuals in need of financial aid is because the population of Kg Sg Akar is relatively large with more than 6,000 residents.
The village head attributed the large sum of donations to the Chinese community of 2,000 people.
“The Chinese residents here are often the large donors, and I’m glad that the Kg Sg Akar community is very diverse and is helpful of one another even though we are made up of different races,” said Hj Ramlee.
The walkathon was organised by the Masjid Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Committee in Kg Sg Akar.
More than 50 individuals comprising committee members, village residents and residents from neighbouring villages took part in the walkathon.
Hj Ramlee said this is the first walkathon conducted by the committee to celebrate the National Day, hoping that it will become a tradition in the coming years.
